4. Smithsonian Museums — Washington, D.C.
Cost: Admission is free with the exception of the National Museum of African American History and Culture, which requires a timed entry pass, and the Cooper Hewitt Museum in NYC.
The world’s largest museum complex, the Smithsonian encompasses 11 museums and galleries on the National Mall, six other museums and the National Zoo in the greater D.C. area, and two museums in New York City. Features range from science to history, space and art, with a museum to satisfy virtually any curiosity.
Last year, an estimated 30.2 million people collectively visited the properties, with the Air and Space Museum and the Museum of Natural History (which is larger than 18 football fields) the overwhelming favorites. Don’t miss the space shuttle Discovery in the open-air hangar, the last American dinosaurs and the Egyptian mummies.
